Marco Asensio has found an unlikely ally in Phil Neville after the former Manchester United man admitted he used to shave his legs during his spell as a coach in Spain.
Asensio missed Real Madrid’s match on Wednesday evening after picking up an infected pimple which developed after he shaved his legs.
The infection caused Asensio pain while wearing long socks and he was subsequently left out of Madrid’s squad to face APOEL Nicosia.
Phil Neville admitted he used to shave his legs while he was an assistant coach at Valencia
And Neville revealed he’d experienced exactly the same thing during his time in Spain as an assistant manager at Valencia.
‘That’s happened to me’, Neville told BBC 5Live. ‘When you live on the continent, do as the continentals do… You shave your legs, you get infections, you can’t pull your socks up’.
‘It happened two or three years ago’, he added. ‘It can hurt but I don’t think I’d admit that really and then miss a game for Real Madrid.
’99 per cent of people in Spain shave their legs, shave their chest, shave their arms, shave every part of their body. I’m part of the 99 per cent in Spain… When in Rome do as the Romans do’.
Marco Asensio was ruled out of Real Madrid’s game due to an infected pimple on his leg
Asensio has scored four goals for Madrid so far this season but missed the APOEL clash
Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane confirmed Asensio had been ruled out due to an infection before the game claiming it meant the 21-year-old couldn’t pull up his sock.
Los Blancos managed without Asensio, beating the Cypriot outfit 3-0 at the Bernabeu thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos’ overhead kick.
Asensio has made a huge impression at Madrid since breaking into their first team last season – the youngster has four goals already this campaign.
Neville left his post at Valencia in 2016 to join the punditry team at Sky Sports where he works alongside his brother Gary.
