Jurgen Klopp became embroiled in an unseemly row with Sevilla’s bench after Liverpool squandered a lead in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

A number of the visitors’ backroom team felt Klopp engineered Sevilla’s manager, Eduardo Berizzo, being sent to the stands for time-wasting.

The Liverpool boss reacted at full-time after the Spaniard’s fitness coach, Pablo Fernandez, launched a verbal tirade in his direction. Fernandez had to be restrained before being led down the tunnel.

Klopp was seen asking the Sevilla assistant manager Ernesto Marcucci ‘What have I done? Why are you shouting?’ before being blocked off by two security guards.

‘It’s all fine,’ Klopp said after he had been invited into the Sevilla dressing room to smooth the situation over.

‘They might have thought I was responsible for the red card of their colleague. I was not happy about throwing the ball away. I wasn’t exceptionally emotional. It was an offensive situation for us when he threw the ball away.

‘He invited me into the dressing room. We had a completely normal talk. There were a lot of smiles in their faces. Maybe not in mine because of the result.’

Liverpool were left to rue Roberto Firmino’s missed penalty before half-time as Joaquin Correa silenced Anfield with a 72nd-minute equaliser.

Berizzo had already been sent off by that point after twice throwing the ball away inside his technical area – bizarrely the second of which when his side were chasing the game.

‘OK, two different game situations,’ Berizzo explained. ‘When we were winning, Liverpool countered and I threw the ball away. That wasn’t right. That was a mistake. However in the second half, when we losing, I still decided to throw the ball away to make up for what I did.

‘That’s the sportsmanlike thing to do. My counterpart understood but the referee did not. I’ve had a chat with Klopp and wanted to put right my initial mistake. When my team needed me I went against them.’

Joe Gomez was sent off with minutes to play but Liverpool did welcome back Philippe Coutinho after the Brazilian’s very public summer transfer request and desire to leave for Barcelona.

‘Phil trained really well,’ Klopp added. Maybe some situations were not so lucky for him tonight but it helped us and him for him to play.’
